Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April 1972. As an only girl, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Along with two jobs part-time, she took classes in secondary teaching at Temple University. The hope was to become an English High School teacher. The dream, however was in vain when she left the college after a year of study and became a teacher's assistant. Following her first gigs singing at poetry events, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. In the Roots concert, she made her debut in the spotlight as an artist. After that, she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to experience performing arts through the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. She was signed by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
